  • Cathedral Gorge State Park
  • Nevada State Parks, Panaca NV
  • Pleasant, quiet state park campground. In the flats at the bottom of the gorge. The gorge is an easy hike away.

  • Ocean Cove
  • private business Jenner CA
  • I came here 15 years ago with abalone-diving City friends. I'm not even sure that's a thing any more. Anyway, the campground is still here and it's still awesome. They have spots available when no one else does, and it's the simplest check-in ever: Pay them ($5 off for cash!), they give you a receipt for your windshield and tell you to park at any picnic table/fire ring that's not occupied. The rest of the world seems to get more complicated and bureaucratic, but this is the easiest damn check-in I've ever experienced. Checkout 2pm. Ocean Cove Bar and Grille is a sweaty uphill 3/4 mile walk away. Basic bar food, but great view of the ocean and campground.

  • Newport Campground
  • Wakulla County, St Marks FL
  • A very handy spot, right outside St Marks Wildlife Refuge. A great place to spend more time someday.

  • Roaring River Campground
  • Roaring River State Park, MO
  • Fifth spring in a row! Also a fishery. This may be the fishiest yet! Quite large, there is a lodge with a nice restaurant up the hill. There is wifi strong enough I could use it from my van ... but it only worked for the last 6 hours of my two days there. There was live bluegrass music in the Lodge on Friday night!

  • Richardson Grove
  • California State Parks, Benbow CA
  • In the redwoods where 101 narrows and winds through the big trees. Next to where Reggae On The River used to happen. The campgrounds are west of the road, the Eel River is to the east. Once you're past the kiosk and in the park, there is an underpass to connect the two. The coolest part of the campground used to be over a little bridge on the Eel River on the east side. It seems to be closed permanently, which is too bad.

  • Burro Creek Campground
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Wikieup AZ
  • A great find! Very nice BLM campground right off US 93 between Phoenix and Kingman

  • Bennett Spring Campground
  • Missouri State Parks, Lebanon MO
  • Fourth spring in a row! This one has a fishery. It's very spread out. Long drive up the hill to pick a site, drive back and check in, then later drive back to fish or walk or just see the sites. Swimming not allowed in the park, but just outside and across the bridge is river access where you can swim. Despite the reliance on driving, a very nice place. People were catching lots of fish!

  • Lava Beds Campground
  • Lava Beds National Park, Tulelake CA
  • Really nice place, quiet and well maintained and a beautiful situation, on the side of a high hill overlooking a huge, arid valley. Wildlife refuges right down the hill.

  • Waxmyrtle Campground
  • Oregon Dunes, Suislaw National Forest, Florence OR
  • very restful and quiet, in the piney woods near the dunes. Actually, now I can hear the off-road vehicles in the distance, still restful though. The walk along the river bluff is very nice.

  • Virgin Valley Campground
  • Sheldon NWR, Denio NV
  • Nearest gas is > 80 miles in any direction. An unexpected valley full of reedy marshes in the middle of endless high country desert. There's little warm pool and bathhouse with two showers that run always forever. The whole thing is quite unexpected!

  • Sardine Campground
  • Tahoe National Forest, Sierra City CA
  • busy but pretty quiet, very scenic. nature trail. a short hike past the swimming pond to a great sunset over non-swimming Sardine Lake, shining off the Sierra Buttes to the left.

  • Brazos Bend State Park
  • Texas State Parks, Needville TX
  • Unexpectedly wonderful place! Alligators, zillions of birds, nice hikes

  • Van Meter State Park
  • Missouri State Parks, Marshall MO
  • Really pleasant little park south of the Missouri, on a plain that used to be a Missouri Indian settlement. Deluxe shower building, well-maintained nature trails, nice picnic area, what's not to like?

  • Salton Sea State Recreation Area
  • California State Parks, Bombay Beach CA
  • On the east side of the lake, making for spectacular sunsets over the water every night. Very quiet and beautiful and delightful. The big north-south highway and train tracks are pretty close and carry big noisy trucks and trains respectively.

  • Tecopa Hot Springs
  • Inyo County Parks, Tecopa CA
  • Odd place. Separate bathhouses for men and women, nudity required. Camping is available in glorified parking lot across the road overlooking the settlement pond. No potable water, must drive a couple of miles for that. Really interesting salt flats area at the edge of town. In the last couple of years a pair of restaurants have opened. And breweries!

  • Arlington Hotel Resort and Spa
  • private business Hot Springs AR
  • Historic hotel in the very heart of downtown Hot Springs. Nice hot tub, I'm sure the pool is nice in the summer. A short walk to the Hot Springs Visitors Center.

  • Round Spring Campground
  • Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Eminence MO
  • These federal parks along the Current River are national treasures. I had a great time here tonight.

  • Confluence Campground
  • Confluence State Park, Wenatchee CG
  • expensive but deluxe, with hookups. very nice hike over to the wildlife preserve, near downtown

  • Fontainebleau State Park
  • Louisiana State Parks, Mandeville LA
  • expensive, but quite nice really. great beach, little nature trail through the swamp, gazebo.

  • Upper Pahranagat Lake
  • US Fish and Wildlife, Alamo NV
  • Lovely campsites right off the busy highway, next to NWR water - either a small lake or a large pond. Idyllic except for the noise and headlights of the constant semis 300 yds away.

  • Odessa Campground
  • Fremont Wimena National Forest, Klamath Falls OR
  • a real find! On a stretch of road otherwise bereft of camping, maybe 3 rarely traveled miles off the busy highway. Not a soul has been here in my 18 hours or so of residency. Sites are primitive. There is a place to put a kayak into the slough. The site is right on the edge of USFS property, there are barns and farm buildings 1/2 mile away. Bathroom is unlocked!
