Spots in Oklahoma

map viewlist view

  • Felt Picnic Area Campground
  • Rita Blanca National Grassland, Felt OK
  • Sweet little one night stand freebie in the endless Oklahoma Panhandle. On the edge of the tiny town of Felt.

  • Cracker Barrel
  • Cracker Barrel, Oklahoma City OK
  • Quite user friendly! There are 8-9 spaces specifically marked out for RVs, and you just park there. I parked under the tree at the edge and actually had a pleasant time. I felt safe and reasonably private, and it was surprisingly quiet in the morning.

  • Wichita Mountains NWR
  • US Fish and Wildlife Service, Lawton OK
  • Beautiful place, quite surprising with hundreds of miles of flat farmland and prairie before and after. Bison, Elk (so they say), and a prairie dog town conveniently next to a parking area.

  • No Man's Land Regional Park
  • County Park, Guymon OK
  • There's no signs to say it's ok to overnight (or not!). Allstays says they allow it, so I did it and it was great. I parked at the edge of what used to be the dump station loop, behind the Information Center building. There's a couple of trees, a covered area (with no picnic table), looking out over the skateboard park 100 yards away. Nobody bothered me from 7pm to 10 am. Kudos to Guymon!

  • Cherokee Inn
  • private business Cherokee OK
  • A formerly deluxe roadside motel, just hanging on. It has a steakhouse which looked nice, but was closed on Tuesday night.

  • Sleepy Time Motel
  • private business Wagoner OK
  • This is a no frills place, but perfect for what I need tonight, which is a place to wait out a record-breaking cold snap.

  • Black Kettle Campground
  • Black Kettle National Grassland, Cheyenne OK
  • Just a parking area with trees and picnic tables. I enjoyed it here. The water spigot is 40' from the lot in a field and looks like it might be dicey, but the water was delicious!

  • Doby Springs Campground
  • County Park, Rosston OK
  • A municipal park a couple of miles off the highway next to a golf course. Very pretty grove of trees and a pond. You're supposed to pay at the clubhouse, but there was nobody there.

  • Doris Campground
  • Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, Lawton OK
  • Very hot right now, but what a cool place. Tucked away in the scrub oak forest along the shores of this little CCC-made reservoir. Few campers because it is so insanely HOT. The shade is a real attraction in this area. Also the shower!

  • Salt Plains Campgrounds
  • Oklahoma State Parks, Cherokee OK
  • Did not stay here, but I want to note it for the record. It's a beautiful, peaceful place. It has a few cabins, which I wish I'd thought of yesterday. It has a no-hookups camping area at the dam parking lot that was a mere $14/night. That looked great also. Then below the dam and across the river is a big, spacious full hookups campground. Any of them would be a great place to spend the a day or two.

  • Red Oak Campground
  • Okmulgee State Park, Okmulgee OK
  • Most of their tent sites are truly for tents, but there's a little group of three new no-hookup sites that are really nice. Up on the hill, fairly level, private. I chose the one away from the folks playing loud country music. It's a short walk down the hill to the swimming beach, which was incredibly refreshing on this muggy day. Bathroom and shower are close but not too close.

  • Natural Falls Campground
  • Oklahoma State Parks, Siloam Springs OK
  • The park is pretty cool. It's an easy walk from the campground to the little waterfall, and the boardwalk makes some quite dramatic bridges over the chasm. Yes there is a chasm! Oklahoma State Parks did a very nice job with this. And across the chasm is a frisbee golf course!

  • Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge
  • Department of the Interior, Cherokee OK
  • Wonderful bird-watching place. There a short hike through the marshland to a blind.
