Cross the Sierras on 88
Cracker Box in Carson was closed, so had a philly cheese steak next door, fulfilling my grease and carb needs nicely.
Got stopped by the law outside Minden, but was let off - whew! Mountains were beautiful, but not really feelin\' the trip yet.

Western edge of the Sierras on old 49
Ok, I\'m into it now! A very lovely but slow and curvy drive down old route 49. Grass was green, hills were steep and scenic, towns were old and historical.
Had to take a 12 mile side trip to get gas, from Coulterville to Greeley Hill. pretty cool.

Fresno - Mojave
Got to the Sportsmobile place 11:30, didn\'t get away till 3:30. Had a very successful visit, but left Fresno pretty late. Blasted down 99, then through the Tehachapi Pass, which I think is one of the prettiest drives anywhere. There was a relatively cheap room in Mojave, so I just stayed here, rather than driving alllll the way to Carlton\'s in the dark.

rote of old 395, straight south to North County
very glad I stopped last night, this trip woulda been no fun in the dark (but what road trip is?).
Driving through Lancaster was snowy and crowded, the Cajon Pass was easy, after stressing about the snow. I-15 through Temecula, Sun City, very evocative of the 80\'s in SoCal.
shore is purty in the winter.
city day
One of these days I went to Balboa Park and had nostalgia day in the city
exit North County via San Pasqual, cross the Cleveland Mtns to the desert
on the road again! Very hard to leave such a well-appointed paradise on such a nice day! Stopped at a boring archaeology museum, San Pasqual battlefield closed. Oak Grove CG (Cleveland NF) was really nice on this nice day, but pressed on. Made it down the mountain tailgated by rude Cali drivers into Palm Springs, to Desert Hot Springs, to my date with the hot springs.
Mojave desert to Owens Valley
Awoke to an effing hot in DHS. Ate at the Cottage Inn, better than my motel grease-trap, and very cozy but still not very good. I started a off-road shortcut, but good sense prevailed and I backtracked.
the ole 395 run home
What a beautiful day for a drive. Lone Pine, Big Ping, Independence, breakfast at Bishop Grille, June Lake, Mono Lake, Bridgeport.
Did a very smart thing and stopped at Travertime Hot Springs - awesome.
Made me get home after dark, but great anyway.
