  • Russian Gulch
  • California State Parks, Caspar CA
  • Very cool state park a little south of Fort Bragg. There's a waterfall two miles up the canyon, something called Devils Punchbowl on the rocky shore, and lots of other hikes in between.

  • Juniper Campground
  • Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Watford City ND
  • The is the campground of the North Unit of the TRNP. It's quite pleasant.

  • Burro Creek Campground
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Wikieup AZ
  • A great find! Very nice BLM campground right off US 93 between Phoenix and Kingman

  • Roaring River Campground
  • Roaring River State Park, MO
  • Fifth spring in a row! Also a fishery. This may be the fishiest yet! Quite large, there is a lodge with a nice restaurant up the hill. There is wifi strong enough I could use it from my van ... but it only worked for the last 6 hours of my two days there. There was live bluegrass music in the Lodge on Friday night!

  • Van Meter State Park
  • Missouri State Parks, Marshall MO
  • Really pleasant little park south of the Missouri, on a plain that used to be a Missouri Indian settlement. Deluxe shower building, well-maintained nature trails, nice picnic area, what's not to like?

  • Pikes Peak Campground
  • Iowa State Park, McGregor IA
  • Beautiful location high on the bluffs above the mighty Mississippi. Nice set of trails with awesome vistas on the river bluffs

  • Wetmore Campground
  • Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, Unity OR
  • Developed yet rustic and primitive, if that makes any sense. It's laid out nicely, but seems terribly underused and under-maintained. There are non-working no water spigots and a "No Water" sign. The fact that the Forest Service charges only $5 tells you what you need to know about the condition of the place. I however am liking it just fine and am happy to be here! Yellow Pine Campground is 1/2 away, much bigger and more open, but also underused and under-maintained. Six campers in a 40 site place on Fourth of July

  • Doe Point Campground
  • Rogue River/Siskiyou National Forest, Medford OR
  • Right on scenic Fish Lake. Very pleasant. Next time I will try Fish Lake Campground, which is very close and only a few hundred yards from Fish Lake Resort.

  • Alley Spring Campground
  • Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Eminence MO
  • Another very nice, well maintained campground built around another gorgeous freshwater spring. The one has Alley Mill, a grist mill driven by the outflow of Alley Spring - now a park info center. The mill is a short walk from the campground. If you hunt around for it there is swimming access to the river (swinning in the spring outflow, that's a no no in all these parks).

  • Summit Lake South Campground
  • Lassen National Park, Old Station CA
  • Lovely spot at 7,000'-ish on the south side of a little alpine lake. On the north side is Summit Lake North Campground which costs $2/night more. It has flush toilets and sinks with running water. It has the shambling, kinda charming disorganization I associate with National Park campgrounds. Sites are not very level, but there's a lake to swim in and you're in an awesome place!

  • Modoc NWR
  • US Fish and Wildlife, Alturas CA
  • A must stop for me if I am in the area. There is a nice auto tour around a little lake. My impression is that the Sand Cranes are the star attraction here.

  • Point Abalone Campground
  • California State Parks, Westport CA
  • A big shadeless rectangle of land on the top of a bluff overlooking the Pacific. The southernmost of three campgrounds at Westport Union Landing State Beach.

  • Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge
  • Department of the Interior, Cherokee OK
  • Wonderful bird-watching place. There a short hike through the marshland to a blind.

  • Twin Peaks Campground
  • San Isabel National Forest, Twin Lakes CO
  • First campground coming off Independence Pass heading south. Real pretty. Still, $19 doesn't get you a lot in Colorado. Checkout time is noon. Elevation 9,620' - yikes!

  • Falls City Campground
  • Falls City City Park, Falls City NE
  • Very pleasant city park with a pond, shade trees, trails.

  • Lower Lee Vining Campground
  • Inyo National Forest, Lee Vining CA
  • In the style of Inyo Forest campgrounds(*), this one is hard to find(**) and kind of shabby and rough, but it's in a really beautiful location. This one is on Lee Vining Creek, in the aspen/pine forest on top of the glacial till. It's the first campground on CA 120 west of Mono Lake heading up to spectacular Tioga Pass. It's pretty cool. It's very popular with fishermen. (*) Except the Inyo campgrounds around June Lake/Mammoth. They are run by a concessionare. They are a little nicer, cost twice as much, and have three times as many rules. (**) There is an arrow for "camping", but you must turn off the road to see the "Lower Lee Vining" sign.

  • North Campground
  • Bryce Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon City UT
  • The other campground at Bryce, open longer into the fall. I like this one better, more convenient to the Lodge and Visitor's Center (wifi) and right next to the Rim Trail, which is what Bryce is all about.

  • Lake Solano Campground
  • Solano County Parks, Winters CA
  • Pretty campground and park on a little lake made from damming Putah Creek, the outflow of Lake Berrysea. The park is long and skinny following the south side of the lake/creek for quite a while. On the north side is the fairly busy road from the lake to the freeway. Some trucks and a lot of noisy motorcycles.
