  • Reversed Creek Campground
  • Inyo National Forest, June Lake CA
  • Except for a couple of "view lots" - sites 1 and 2 - the rest of the sites are in a compact bunch, nestled in a little canyon. Right across the road from Gull Lake.

  • Ar Palas
  • private business Istanbul Turkey
  • on a steep hill right next to the super happening Taksim District. Breakfast is adequate. Amazing view from the room, even better up the fire escape on the roof.

  • Rock Corral
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Milford UT
  • Ten miles of washboard-y gravel road off of Utah 121. Not worth it as it turns out. A very full open-top trash barrel in the middle of the camping area and not even a porta-potty. Some cool big boulders at the edge of the camping area, but otherwise nothing interesting. Update: The signs were (IMO) misleading. I am not at the official camping area. In the morning I chose not to subject the van to 10 more miles of this bumpy, dusty road, so I will probably never know what it's really like. :)

  • El Capitan State Beach
  • California State Parks, Goleta CA
  • super nice and quiet and not as busy as I thought it would be. Campsites are on the bluffs above the beach, stairs were closed for repairs. Nice bathrooms, not crowded tonight).

  • Las Vegas Bay Campground
  • Lake Mead NRA, Henderson NV
  • Still quiet and cheap and convenient, EXCEPT for the generators which always seem to be running here during the permissible hours. But really, a $10 (or $5 for seniors) nice campground 16 miles from the edge of Las Vegas ... gotta take the bad with the good. Checks not accepted, so make sure to have that $5 bill!

  • Horsethief Campground
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Moab UT
  • This is where you camp when Island in the Sky is full ... which it always it. The method is to stop here on the way in, nail down a site then continue on another 20-odd miles to the Grand viewpoint ... then come back.

  • SwiftWater RV Park
  • private business White Bird ID
  • Owner was a right-wing lunatic, but the campsite situation was superb, right on the river. Nice laundry room with shower (costs extra!) and tv

  • Wheeler Peak Campground
  • Great Basin National Park, Baker NV
  • Almost 10,000', peak views, good day hikes. A beautiful spot.

  • San Elijo State Park
  • California State Parks, Cardiff CA
  • Expensive, but oh so cool, on the bluffs at Cardiff CA. The town is right across the highway, great bluff-waking for miles northward, Cardiff Beach and beach side restaurants southward. Mornings and evenings are often pretty gray and damp. Nice firepits.

  • Jumbo Rocks Campground
  • Joshua Tree National Park, Joshua Tree CA
  • Sites sprinkled around giant rocks. Nice little 1.7 mile loop trail. Beautiful, restful place, even when crowded.

  • Horton Campground
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Bishop CA
  • A nice free campground on the side of the glacial slope about ten miles north of Bishop. Pretty rough gravel spots running for some distance along lovely Horton Creek

  • Tuttle Creek Campground
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Lone Pine CA
  • Close to Lone Pine, really excellent view of Owens Valley south over dry Owens Lake, The last 2 miles have many brutal diagonal speed bumps, beware!

  • Buckhorn Campground
  • Army Corps of Engineers - Black Butte Lake, Orland CA
  • Due west of Chico, about 12 miles on the west side of I-5 is Black Butte Lake. There are two ACE campgrounds. This one is the main one, with a nature preserve and large recreation area. Open all year, on a point of land jutting into the lake, quite scenic. This campground is closer to the lake.

  • Torreya State Park
  • Florida State Parks, Bristol FL
  • An out-of-the-way state park with a good price point. The big deal here is that it is on a bluff ... in Florida. Really! My site is at the edge of a steep drop-off that falls for a few hundred feet and gives a great view ... of nothing really interesting. This feature would be unremarkable in most places, but it's the highest bluff in Florida!

  • Katherine's Landing Campground, Lake Mohave
  • Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Bullhead City AZ
  • huge, rv-friendly campground. No elec hookups, so generators are running everywhere. On the hill a few hundred feet above the lake.

  • Two Medicine Campground
  • Glacier National Park, East Glacier MT
  • Typical National Park campground, the parking pads aren't even close to level, the roads are very rough, but they're amazingly low cost and you are in a spectacular place! This is the place you go when you know the main part of the park will be full by 11. At the east end of gorgeous Two Medicine Lake, spectacular mountains all around.
