  • Sycamore Grove Campground
  • Mendocino National Forest, Red Bluff CA
  • A lonely outpost of Mendocino National Forest - a little chunk of federal land next to the diversion dam. The parking lots are huge, making it seem like it was full of action back when the dam was being used create the diversionary lake. Emptying the dam a couple of decades ago was sad for the boaters of Red Bluff, but great for the salmon, who were being killed off by the salmon ladder. This beautiful campground suffers from being too close to the town of Red Bluff. The bathroom has a security code to prevent random weirdos from moving in.

  • Preston Creek Campground
  • Cache National Forest, Logan UT
  • on a little creek near the busy road = occasionally sketchy neighbors

  • Newport Campground
  • Wakulla County, St Marks FL
  • A very handy spot, right outside St Marks Wildlife Refuge. A great place to spend more time someday.

  • Economy Lodge
  • private business Kelso WA
  • low priced but creepy

  • Jackson Wellspring
  • private business Ashland OR
  • right outside Ashland, dusty little hippie place near the fancy Lithia Hot Springs Resort. The pools were excellent and clean, as was the pavilion area with wifi and electrical outlets. But the rest of the place was third world and had a weird vibe.

  • Lane Spring Campground
  • Mark Twain National Forest, Rolla MO
  • Third spring in a row! The campsites are nice, but the place is very remote and I didn't feel good about my neighbors, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I might've. There looked like very nice sites next to the river at the end of the loop (next to the sketchy people)

  • Pit River Campground
  • Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Fall River Mills CA
  • On the Pit River, which is a pretty good sized river for Nor Cal in a drought. There are seven campsites and a picnic area next to the river. It's almost exactly 2 steep miles of paved road from 299 to the campground. We are in a HOT spell, 111° in Redding, 100° in the shade right here at my campsite, and I am not digging it. Some of my neighbors give off an aggressive prison vibe, others are creepily too friendly. I guess there are normal neighbors also, but I haven't noticed them.

  • Red Rose Motel
  • private business Yakima WA
  • Possibly the seediest motel I ever stayed in.

  • Dalton Springs Campground
  • Manti-Lasal National Forest, Monticello UT
  • 5 miles outta town on a good road. Panoramic view of many miles between the trees, closed-in feel in the scrub oaks, sketchy, kinda creepy campground host.

  • Wilson Canyon Roadside Rest
  • Nevada DOT, Smith Valley NV
  • Beautiful, idyllic spot on NV 208 right on the West Walker River. In the shade of a row of stately old cottonwoods, it's quite spacious and has at least four really nice RV spots right in the river.

  • Jackson Demonstration Forest Campground
  • California State Parks, Fort Bragg CA
  • A convenient, quiet place in the forest on the road from Willets to Fort Bragg. It was free when I stayed three years ago, costs something now.
