Three miles north of Old Station. There is a perfectly idyllic picnic area on the east side of the road and a campground on the west.
The campground has no water so it's a little cheaper than Cave and Hat Creek.
Even better, the big RVs don't come here, so it's more mellow - a win-win for me!
Third night in a row camping next to swiftly running water - good planning on my part!
Pretty busy on the last Saturday before 4th weekend. My favorite area is the sites clustered around the day-parking area. This time I lucked out and got the second closest spot.
Crashed out in my hammock to the sound of the creek - pretty cool!
This site has good morning shade, unlike some of the neighbors.
back again! Site 20 is probably the best of them all. It's a pull-through site just past the parking area, with nothing between you and Hat Creek, 40' away. It's close enough to the highway that you can see passing trucks through the trees, but the creek is noisy enough to mostly mask the sound, which is perfect.
I guess this really is my new favorite spot on Hat Creek. Second time in 8 days. Different site this time, across the road on the inside of the loop and a little further from the parking area.
First time I've camped here! It's about 3 miles after I leave CA 89 to take CA 44 to Susanville, and I've never driven the extra miles to stay here instead of Cave CG. It's great!
Same beautiful Hat Creek, with the same modest pine forest in the middle of the giant lava field, but $6 cheaper. No water, I guess.
I have always been enchanted by the picnic area across the road, and now I'm spending the night here!
Just stopped at the picnic area today, no camping. Hat Creek is awesome, and this is an excellent spot to park in the shade and enjoy it. Routes 44 and 89 cross over the creek at a bridge right here, hence the name. Excellent spot for fishing, (very cold) swimming, or just hanging out and believing the universe is a blessed place.
