At the Rainbow Road exit off I-80.
On the South Yuba River.
Super nice place, even if the freeway is 200 yards away.
If you're familiar with the Bay Area to Reno run on I-80, there's a place where it crosses some beautiful rapids. This is about ½ mile downstream from that.
T-Mobile cellphone reception was good.
Cruised in about 7:15 on a Sunday nght in August, almost no one here. Weird.
Site 6 is a very good site, looking out on a nice stretch of river. easy access to a good beach and good looking swimming hole.
They have cut down a lot of trees. Fire mitigation no doubt. But is also means that road noise from the very close and endlessly busy I-80 is EVEN louder! Too bad. Everything else about the place is super sweet.
So far I'm finding that even in the heart of summer one can find an open spot here for one night, especially if you get here in the early afternoon. This site was reserved last night, and tomorrow night, but free tonight, so here I am!
Site 13 is not as perfect as the others I stayed in, but it's on the outside of the loop on the river side, so it's still pretty good.
Annoying flies this afternoon.
Also, the air quality bad around sunset, so I'm busting out the "climate change" tag again.
Every campsite has a reserved sign, but most are reserved for later in the week
So as it turns out I've got plenty of choices for a one night stand on Monday.
Site 8 has it's own beach and a great view down the river (straight into the sunset), but it's open to the big rig sites, where there are often loud barking dogs and people sitting on their asses watching you.
Great spot though.
Also, very aggressive chipmunks.
Wildfires made the air quality bad tonight, hence the "climate change" tag.
My site, #11, is 15 yards from a perfect little swimming access spot on the river. The river forms a couple of excellent swimming holes that run most of the length of the campground. Sites 11, 12, 13 all have nice river access, and it looks like the lower numbered sites towards the entrance have even better access.
It turns out the busy transcontinental train tracks are right across the river. You can hear it but you can't see it ... from my site anyway.
