A mile or so north of Cave Campground is a gravel road (called Wander Lane on the Google map) and a bridge over Hat Creek.
If you follow that road you will see a couple of good campsites.
Cave Campground was completely closed. This was a total shock to me. In previous years, even when the the campground itself was closed, the parking area in front was left open for us overnight campers. But today it was gated off at the highway.
I was massively bummed, but found this place a mile further down the road.
It was quite nice, right at the edge of the forest, with a nice view north down the fire-ravaged valley.
