  • Old Brewery Hostel
  • Mizpah Hotel, Tonopah NV
  • Hostel-style lodging in a cool-looking renovated brewery building behind the actual Mitzpah. Register in the hotel, walk out the back door and across the street and there you are.

  • Aspen Motel
  • private business Oakridge OR
  • Crummy little place, but nice tv and good wifi. Oakridge has a real Appalachian feel to it, not in a good way.

  • Motel 6
  • Motel 6, Mohave CA
  • handy but non-descript, they charge for wifi!

  • South Fork Inn
  • private business Idaho Falls ID
  • Quite nice and deluxe as budget motels go.

  • Town House Motel
  • private business Winnemucca NV
  • Very pleasant, right downtown, easy walk to food

  • River Pines Resort
  • private business Graeagle CA
  • Nice little resort motel in the Reno getaway party town of Graeagle.

  • Trails Motel
  • private business Lone Pine CA
  • Right next to the movie museum at the south end of Lone Pine. Can walk to the pizza place.

  • Titanic Comfort Hotel
  • private business Istanbul Turkey
  • nice place, kinda boring, in an upscale but boring part of town. Breakfast was good. They stuck me in the basement.

  • Motel 6
  • chain, Fort Bragg CA
  • One of the cheaper motels in town, and for good reason! The room itself is nice. Motel 6 is (IMO), kind of the Target of motel chains in that it offers quite a bit more style than it's competitors. There's a bar/restaurant on the lot that's very handy. Just pack up in the morning and walk to breakfast.

  • Lamplighter Motel
  • private business Alamosa CO
  • Downtown Alamosa is a cool place to hang out, but this motel is falling apart. Breakfast at their litle restaurant is included, and it was a pretty good breakfast.

  • Red Rose Motel
  • private business Yakima WA
  • Possibly the seediest motel I ever stayed in.

  • Silver Surf Motel
  • private business San Simeon CA
  • Convenient place to crash on a stretch of highway with not too many options. The first reasonably prices place you will find after failing to find a place in Big Sur. Close to Hearst Castle and the Sea Elephant Mating Ground!

  • Caliente Hot Springs Motel
  • private business Caliente NV
  • Recently re-opened, run by an earnest young couple for whom I wish nothing but the best. You can get a rooms with your own tub, or for cheaper a regular room like mine, which is still quite nice, with a spacious kitchenette. With one of these rooms you can use the private tubs all evening. There are four more or less identical private tubs to choose from. They are open to the public until 3pm after that they are solely for the use of us lucky lodgers. :) You fill your tub from empty each time, so hygiene is pretty good, I think.

  • Desert Hot Springs Resort
  • private business Desert Hot Springs CA
  • The lodge itself is not fancy, just a standard-issue two story motel with paper-thin walls. But it's got a restaurant and a bar and all those lovely soaking pools, so it's fancy to me! The motel is a rectangle enclosing the pool area - 6-7 pools, a couple very hot, a big pool where the kids hang out, and a bar area over in the corner. Cool Rat Pack-y kind of place.

  • Marble Motel
  • private business Tremonton UT
  • Tidy little place near the center of a tidy little Mormon town.

  • Waters Edge Resort
  • private business Garden City UT
  • Was called the Bear Lake Lodge until recently. The old motel seems to be some kind of doomed placeholder for a deluxe extended stay place "coming soon". Great location, the lake directly in back, pizza place to the north and a nice modern place that even serves beer to the south ... which turns out to be the same owners as the motel.

  • Eureka Inn
  • private business Eureka CA
  • Historic hotel in the heart of downtown. Cool place with a cool bar with frequent live music. The downstairs areas are large and very grand, and you can feel the history, which would merit my "fancy" designation. The actual rooms however are pretty shabby with not much space and few amenities, hence the "plain" designation.Three blocks away from the heart of Old Town, with all it's eating, drinking, and shopping opportunities.

  • Edgefield
  • McMenamin's, Troutdale OR
  • Disneyland for adults! many bars, three restaurants, weekend concerts, historical buildings, free coffee, beautiful grounds, and warm soaking pools with groovy little shower thingies and complementary bathrobes. deee-LUX! There are men's and women's dorms at opposite ends of the third floor, so one can stay relatively cheaply.

  • Economy Lodge
  • private business Kelso WA
  • low priced but creepy

  • El Campo Casa
  • private business Jackson CA
  • quiet, faux Spanish style, very restful

  • Rodeway Inn
  • Rodeway Inn, Cedar City UT
  • Very basic motel on Center St, about five blocks south of Center and Main, the core of any good Mormon town. A lot of semi-permanent residents. Not really sketchy, just poor. Indoor pool and jacuzzi were very nice.
