  • Carolina Beach State Park
  • North Carolina State Parks, Carolina Beach NC
  • odd check in: 1. pick a site, 2. drive 2 miles to the office, 3. drive back. Very nice campground and park, though.

  • Petersburg Campground
  • Army Corps of Engineers, Augusta GA
  • On Strom Thurmond Lake, god help me. According to the map I am on the Georgia side of the lake, South Carolina ten miles away. There are a number of ACE campgrounds on the lake. All except this one closed at the end of September.

  • Glass Creek Campground
  • Inyo National Forest, Mammoth CA
  • Campground is less than a mile off 395 on a good gravel road. It's free and the campsites are quite spacious.

  • Dixie dispersed
  • Dixie National Forest, Panguitch UT
  • bad: right next to a dusty, gravel road good: right next to a happily burbling brook I am here because the campground a mile away is closed for the season, so my hope is there won't be much traffic on this road tonight.

  • Duke's Slickrock Campground
  • private business Hanksville UT
  • Campground, cabins, and a restaurant in the junction town of Hanksville. The campground is reasonably priced. The restaurant has frustrating service and indifferent food, but it's a short walk.

  • Gansner Bar
  • Plumas National Forest, Belden CA
  • Nice little spot, 1/2 mile off of 70, on the North Fork of the Feather River, near where it joins the main river. It is not well marked that the campground is at this turnoff so it's easy to drive right past. Once you make the turnoff it's well signed. $25 seems like quite a high price, but the concessionaire needs to make a profit I guess. $12.50 ain't so bad!

  • Leigh Creek Campground
  • Bighorn National Forest, Ten Sleep WY
  • I got lucky, snagged the last site on a Tuesday in high season. Bustling little Ten Sleep Creek is 30' sideways and 14' down from my picnic table. It's very noisy, which is so great after living with the sound of semi-trailer trucks on the lonesome highway so many nights.

  • East Totten Trail Campground
  • Army Corps of Engineers, Coleharbor ND
  • Right on the lake! Spacious, level, wide-open sites. Stupid reservation-only Army Corps sign-up. Bar and Grill 400 yards up the hill.
