  • Las Petacas Campground
  • Carson National Forest, Taos NM
  • Good things about this place are that it's cheap and very close to Taos. Other than that, it's dusty, noisy, cramped and bumpy roads US 64 is way too close, so it's noisy, and after dark the headlights are annoying. It gets quiet later.

  • Eureka Inn
  • private business Eureka CA
  • Historic hotel in the heart of downtown. Cool place with a cool bar with frequent live music. The downstairs areas are large and very grand, and you can feel the history, which would merit my "fancy" designation. The actual rooms however are pretty shabby with not much space and few amenities, hence the "plain" designation.Three blocks away from the heart of Old Town, with all it's eating, drinking, and shopping opportunities.

  • Red Rose Motel
  • private business Yakima WA
  • Possibly the seediest motel I ever stayed in.

  • Lamplighter Motel
  • private business Alamosa CO
  • Downtown Alamosa is a cool place to hang out, but this motel is falling apart. Breakfast at their litle restaurant is included, and it was a pretty good breakfast.

  • Gull Lake Campground
  • Inyo National Forest, June Lake CA
  • Finally I am staying here! I have camped across the road at Reverse Creek Campground a couple of times, Gull Lake has always been full. The lake is beautiful and the campground is right next to it. Half the sites are right on the lake. A few hundred yard walk through the trees brings you to the town of June Lake and the main Gull Lake marina. Snacks, library with wifi, brewery up the hill - awesome! The campground itself is kind of shabby and run-down and gives the impression that the concessionaires are just milking it for revenue ... surprise!

  • Brierfield Ironworks State Park
  • Alabama State Parks, Brierfield AL
  • A remote, slightly shabby historical park with campground in the hills of Alabama. Nice folks running it. Along with the Ironworks, there's also an historical church and a baseball field.

  • Norris Campground
  • Yellowstone National Park, West Yellowstone MT
  • An older Yellowstone campgrouund, which means it's dusty, rough and crowded BUT it's in a really cool place. In this case it's a short drive or longish walk to the Norris Geyser Basin.

  • Indian Creek Campground
  • Yellowstone National Park, Gardiner WY
  • Very average campground except that it's in Yellowstone.
