Spots in Tennessee, North Carolina and South

map viewlist view

  • Carolina Beach State Park
  • North Carolina State Parks, Carolina Beach NC
  • odd check in: 1. pick a site, 2. drive 2 miles to the office, 3. drive back. Very nice campground and park, though.

  • Highland Hammock State Park
  • Florida State Park, Sebring FL
  • central Florida, savannah-like, nice big campground

  • Petersburg Campground
  • Army Corps of Engineers, Augusta GA
  • On Strom Thurmond Lake, god help me. According to the map I am on the Georgia side of the lake, South Carolina ten miles away. There are a number of ACE campgrounds on the lake. All except this one closed at the end of September.

  • Watauga Dam Campground
  • Tennessee Valley Authority, Valley Forge TN
  • A really nice spot, a fisherman's dream I imagine. This a tailwater campground, that is to say build below the dam on the river. Most of the campsites are right on the river, so folks were fishing right out of the back of their campsites.

  • Torreya State Park
  • Florida State Parks, Bristol FL
  • An out-of-the-way state park with a good price point. The big deal here is that it is on a bluff ... in Florida. Really! My site is at the edge of a steep drop-off that falls for a few hundred feet and gives a great view ... of nothing really interesting. This feature would be unremarkable in most places, but it's the highest bluff in Florida!

  • Manatee Springs State Park
  • Florida State Parks, Chiefland FL
  • Aquatic recreation paradise. swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, scubaing. You can swim or snorkel in the mouth of the spring Checkout is 3 pm.

  • Fontainebleau State Park
  • Louisiana State Parks, Mandeville LA
  • expensive, but quite nice really. great beach, little nature trail through the swamp, gazebo.

  • Big Biloxi Campground
  • Desoto National Forest, Gulfport MS
  • Boring but very handy to the Gulfport and the coast. They withheld part of the senior discount!

  • Suwanee River State Park
  • Florida State Parks, Live Oak FL
  • A sleepy little campground in a sleepy little park. Pleasant and quiet. The Suwanee River is pretty, it would be fun to kayak it. The bathroom/laundry had a little book exchange!

  • Chewalla Lake Campground
  • National Forests of Mississippi, Holly Springs MS
  • A run down, slightly spooky place, but quite convenient and cheap.

  • Meriwether Lewis Campground
  • Natchez Trace Parkway, Hohenwald TN
  • A campground on the Natchez Trace Parkway, so you don't even have to exit to get there. Drive past the M Lewis obelisk and up the hill to a really nice, free federal government campground.

  • Ocean Pond Campground
  • Osceola National Forest, Olustee FL
  • pretty spot next to the lake

  • Rodanthe Watersports and Campground
  • private business Rodanthe NC
  • funky, but very convenient, probably awesome on a pretty day. Sadly it was gloomy and windy when I was there. good windsurfing I'll bet!

  • Congaree Campground
  • Congaree National Park, Columbia SC
  • merely the gravel parking lot for the tent camping ... not much in the way of amenities, but the park si very cool

  • Pickwick Dam Campground
  • Tennessee Valley Authority, Pickwick TN
  • The TVA is almost like the Army Corps, a gigantic federal agency that builds dams then tosses in a few campgrounds around for fun. This one is below the dam, right across the road from the water. It is fun to watch the barges.

  • Newport Campground
  • Wakulla County, St Marks FL
  • A very handy spot, right outside St Marks Wildlife Refuge. A great place to spend more time someday.

  • Reelfoot Lake Campground
  • Tennessee State Parks, Samburg TN
  • Beautiful lakeside setting. No alcoholic beverages allowed in Tennessee State Parks.

  • Buck Hall Recreation Area
  • Francis Marion National Forest, McClellanville SC
  • on the Intracoastal Waterway. The campground fills early with fishermen, but there is overflow camping a little inland, hence the $3!

  • St Marks NWR
  • US Fish and Wildlife Service, St Marks FL
  • A really interesting place. The entrance and Visitors Center are five miles off the highway, then it's another five miles to the payoff, the lighthouse and actual Gulf of Mexico. The Visitors Center looks quite deluxe, but both times I have been hurrying to make sunset at the beach, and both times I forgot to return in the morning.

  • Louisiana Welcome Center
  • Interstate rest area, Henderson LA
  • Nice welcome center with big parking lot where you can part pretty far from the semis. Free coffee in the morning!

  • Brierfield Ironworks State Park
  • Alabama State Parks, Brierfield AL
  • A remote, slightly shabby historical park with campground in the hills of Alabama. Nice folks running it. Along with the Ironworks, there's also an historical church and a baseball field.
